Summary
August "Auggie" Pullman is ten years old and was born with a rare facial difference. After years of being home-schooled, he starts fifth grade at Beecher Prep. At first many students stare, whisper or avoid him, and his new friend Jack says something cruel when he thinks Auggie cannot hear. Over the school year, Auggie slowly earns friends, forgives Jack and stands up to the bully Julian. On a school trip, older students pick on him and his classmates protect him. At graduation, Auggie wins an award for the quiet strength that has made the whole school kinder.
Main characters
- Auggie Pullman: funny, clever and brave, even when he wants to hide under his astronaut helmet
- Via Pullman: Auggie's older sister, who loves him but sometimes feels invisible at home
- Jack Will: Auggie's first real friend, who makes a big mistake and works hard to fix it
- Summer: sits with Auggie at lunch on the first day simply because she wants to
Themes
Kindness Friendship Courage Family
The biggest theme is choosing kindness. Mr. Browne's first precept says it best:
When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.
My favourite part
My favourite part is the nature retreat, when Jack, Amos and Miles stand up for Auggie in the woods. It shows how much the other students have changed since September.
My review
★★★★★ 5 out of 5
I loved that the story is told by different characters, because it showed me that everyone is dealing with something. It made me think about how I treat new students at my school. I would recommend it to anyone aged 9 and up.
