By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Explain why two fractions such as 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent using a visual model
- Generate equivalent fractions by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number
- Compare two fractions by finding a common denominator
Standards
CCSS.MATH.4.NF.A.1 CCSS.MATH.4.NF.A.2
Materials
- Fraction strip sets (one per pair)
- Mini whiteboards and markers
- "Pizza party" worksheet (26 copies)
- Exit ticket slips
Lesson sequence
| Time | Stage | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 5 min | Warm-up | Students shade 1/2 of a rectangle in two different ways on whiteboards |
| 12 min | Instruction | Model 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 with fraction strips; introduce the "multiply top and bottom" rule |
| 10 min | Guided practice | Pairs find three fractions equal to 2/3 and share on the board |
| 15 min | Independent practice | Pizza party worksheet: which friends ate the same amount? |
| 8 min | Exit ticket | Three questions, collected at the door |
Differentiation
- Extra support: use fraction strips throughout and work in a small group with Mr. Patel, the teaching assistant
- Challenge: find an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100 and write it as a decimal
Assessment
Exit ticket: students who answer 2 of 3 correctly move on to comparing fractions tomorrow. Others join a 10-minute review group at the start of Thursday's lesson.
Reflection
To complete after the lesson: what worked, what to change and which students need follow-up.
