What's in this template
Slide 1: The water cycle
- Where does rain come from, and where does it go next?
Slide 2: By the end of this lesson you can
- Name the four stages of the water cycle
- Explain what the sun does in each stage
- Draw and label the cycle from memory
Slide 3: Think about it
- The water you drank today may once have been drunk by a dinosaur. How is that possible?
Slide 4: Four stages
- 1 Evaporation
- 2 Condensation
- 3 Precipitation
- 4 Collection
Slide 5: Evaporation and condensation
- The sun heats water in oceans, lakes and rivers
- Water turns into invisible water vapour and rises
- High up, it cools and forms clouds of tiny droplets
Slide 6: Precipitation and collection
- Droplets join, get heavy and fall as rain, snow or hail
- Water soaks into the ground or runs into rivers
- Rivers carry it back to the sea, and it starts again
Slide 7: Example: a puddle after rain
- Morning
- A puddle forms after the night’s rain
- Collection: water gathers on the ground
- Afternoon
- The sun comes out and the puddle shrinks
- Evaporation: the water rises as vapour
Slide 8: Class activity: a cycle in a bag
- In pairs, put 2 spoons of water in a zip bag
- Draw the cycle on it and tape it to a sunny window
- Check it at the end of class: what do you see?
Slide 9: Quick check
- What makes water evaporate?
- Where do clouds come from?
- Name two kinds of precipitation
Slide 10: Recap and homework
- Evaporation → condensation → precipitation → collection
- Homework: draw the cycle for your town, with labels
