Statement of purpose
Arjun Nair MS in Computer Science · Georgia Institute of Technology · Fall 2027 |
Introduction: what drives me
In my second year of engineering, my grandmother's village in Palakkad lost power for eleven days after a flood, and the local electricity board had no idea which transformers had failed until linemen walked the route. I spent that summer building a small sensor that texted its status every hour. It was crude, but it made me want to understand how to build reliable systems that work where networks are weak.
Academic background
I completed my B.Tech in Electronics and Communication at the College of Engineering Trivandrum, APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, graduating with a CGPA of 8.7/10. Courses such as Computer Networks and Embedded Systems gave me a foundation in low-power communication. My final-year project, a LoRa-based fault reporting network for rural feeders, was tested on 14 transformers with the Kerala State Electricity Board and won second place at the university project expo.
Professional experience
For the past three years I have worked as a Software Engineer at Zentrix IoT Solutions in Kochi, where I build firmware and backend services for smart meters. My most significant contribution was an over-the-air update system that now updates 2,40,000 meters with a failure rate below 0.2%. This work showed me the limits of my knowledge in distributed systems and fault tolerance, and that is why I want to pursue a master's degree now.
Why this program and university
The MS in Computer Science at Georgia Tech fits my goals because of its Computing Systems specialisation, Professor Ada Gavrilovska's research on edge computing and the Center for Research into Novel Computing Hierarchies. I am particularly keen to take Advanced Operating Systems and to contribute to research on reliable systems at the edge. Atlanta's growing energy-tech industry also gives me the chance to learn from companies working on the grid problems I care about.
Career goals
Short term: After graduating, I plan to work as a systems engineer at a company building infrastructure for energy or utilities, focusing on edge devices that stay reliable on poor networks.
Long term: In ten years I aim to lead an engineering team that brings affordable grid monitoring to utilities in India and Southeast Asia, so that a flood means hours without power, not days.
Conclusion
I bring hands-on experience shipping systems to hundreds of thousands of devices, a grounding in hardware and a clear problem I want to solve. I am ready to deepen my understanding of distributed systems, and I believe Georgia Tech is the right place to do it.
