Simple invoice template
A plain invoice with only what a client needs to pay you: who it is from and to, what it is for, how much is due and by when. Good for one-off jobs, small shops, tutors, landlords and side businesses.
Templates
- Invoice (document): A clean invoice for freelancers and small businesses with your business header, invoice details, a line-item table, subtotal, tax, total due and payment terms. Sample content included.
- Receipt (document): A payment receipt for small businesses, landlords and freelancers that records who paid, what for, how much, the payment method and the balance remaining. Sample content included.
How to use these templates
- Open the simple invoice and replace the brackets with your details and the customer's.
- List what you sold or did on separate lines, with quantity and price.
- Add tax only if you charge it, and a discount if there is one. Ask the AI to total it.
- Download as PDF and send it, or print it and hand it over.
Keeping an invoice simple but complete
- Give it an invoice number even if you only send a few a year. It is how you and your customer refer to it later.
- Write a due date as an actual date, such as 30 April, not just "30 days". It removes any argument about when the count started.
- Describe each item so the customer recognises it months later: "Maths tuition, 4 sessions in March" rather than "Services".
- A simple invoice is not a quote. A quote or estimate comes before the work and can change; the invoice comes after and states what is owed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the simplest way to make an invoice?
Use this template: add your name, the customer, a line for each item and the total, and download it as a PDF. It takes a few minutes and needs no accounting software.
Do I need to add tax to my invoice?
Only if you are registered to collect sales tax, VAT or GST. Otherwise leave the tax line out.
Can I use this as a bill for my shop?
Yes. For a shop sale that is already paid, the receipt template is usually a better fit, since it records the payment method and amount received.
